Our young Fettesians sang cheerful songs to welcome their arrival. Mrs. Jo Hawley expressed her admiration for the range and quality of the facilities available at our FCG Early Years. The tour passed through the carpentry Room to the forest themed Library, the dedicated EY Theater and the beautiful natural wood products in our outdoor playground. All of these reflect the breadth of experiences of Fettes College Guangzhou. From our Early years, Mrs Hawley moved on to visit the classrooms of Primary School and Middle School, taking the chance to stop and speak with pupils across all ages. In small groups our pupils sang the FCG school song and performed recitals of poems learnt from their literature studies. Not wanting to miss the opportunity to grow their knowledge, led by our Pupil Council leader, Jenny from Grade 8, pupils from Primary and Middle School, sat with Mrs Hawley to quiz her about her role as British Consul-General; her own school experience and her impressions of Fettes College Guangzhou. The collected questions of interest to the pupils were: What does the British Consulate do here in Guangzhou? How did she overcome the language/communication barriers when she first came to China? Have there been any funny or embarrassing moments for her since she came to China? What facet of Chinese Culture would she take and implant in British Culture if she could? Which our Fettes Values does she think is most important? Family, academics, nurture, collaboration, personality, inspiration. Mrs. Hawley gladly answered the questions and gave valuable insights across the full range of areas. Amongst these she shared interesting moments of her life in China, including when she first arrived in China with a new born child. She drew comparisons of different experiences in both countries and concluded that the key to knowledge is by being open to experience and learning new things. She is pleased that her son has been exposed to Chinese culture since birth. She appreciated our FCG values very much and believed that the most important one for her is ‘inspiration’. Inspiration fills people with energy to have full enthusiasm for study and work. Mrs Hawley explained that it is very important to find a thing that excites you every day and that will make your life meaningful. Mrs Hawley finished her time with the pupils by saying she felt that they have many varied opportunities at Fettes College Guangzhou and she thought them very fortunate to have that in their school. After lunch shared with staff from across the school, Mrs Hawley signed our visitors book and the shared the inspiring words: 致以最诚挚的祝福 贺颂雅 总领事(广州) To the Fettes Family: Thank you so much for an incredible visit – such wonderful students, staff and facilities!
