十年历久弥新 | Why we're still here a decade on, and what you can do.The Happy Monk创始人 Jeremy Sargent Q1 Mark: “过去几个月,对餐饮业犹如“人间炼狱”。 The last few months have been hell for this industry. We've seen many places lay off staff, some have closed forever. What's the secret sauce here?” Yeah, entrepreneurs are often asking me, 'Why have you stuck around for so long while many other restaurants and bars have come and gone?’COVID's no doubt been an existential threat to our industry and to our team, but I think our success isn't just about agile strategy or effective execution. I think our secret sauce is our Core Values. What do you mean by Core Values? Core Values refer to our fundamental beliefs. These could be beliefs held by a person or shared by an organization. Core Values are a set of guiding principles which dictate our behaviour and give us a sense of right and wrong. They help us with decision-making, sometimes in difficult circumstances. Lots of companies say the key to their success is culture and spend time talking about their Core Values. They all sound good. How do we identify our own? How does this relate to success or longevity? I think for many organizations and individuals, we get lost in what's important. Sometimes, everything feels important; we feel we should start these projects or invest that new tech. #FOMO# Sometimes, instead of thinking about which values are good, we should think about which values we refuse to give up. For example, maybe that marketing is eye-catching but we won't deviate from our Q4 Mark: Jeremy: Yeah. These moments are so valuable because they tell us something about ourselves and about the hierarchy of our values. So we started with our team. We believe that we only as strong as our team is strong. But then, how many of us have felt that daze of directionlessness or ambivalence towards our work or wondered “What am I doing this for?”” We wanted to help them become more attuned to their own Core Values. We ran a 90-minute session based on an exercise developed at Columbia Business School with 40 of our team on Identifying our Personal Core Values. It was a mix of facilitated mingling and guided self-reflection. People felt open to talking about parts of themselves that they had not before. Our team went away knowing more about themselves and each other. They enjoyed it so much that we realized we needed to share this experience with our customers and the business community. A meaningful one.
