On Thursday 22nd November, Hays Guangzhou held a launch event of the 2018 Hays Asia Diversity & Report at the W Hotel.

Over 100 people were in attendance, with notable guests including Karen Maddocks, British Consul General, who is a strong diversity advocate.

The session was also broadcasted and received over one million views on UCLan Online – the multimedia education forum on WeChat, created by Penny Chen, at the University of Central Lancashire (UCLAN).

Kirsty Hulston, Business Director of Hays Guangzhou, uncovered research findings on the diversity landscape in Asia and how businesses can harness the dynamism of diversity.

Interesting discussions were raised with our esteemed panellists Candy Jiang (Jones Lang LaSalle), Kathy Li (Nike) and Queenie Huang (Esquel Group), moderated by Cissy Xie, Manager of Hays Guangzhou.

Key report findings include:

The number of women in line management roles in Greater China is higher than in other key Asian markets. 44 per cent of respondents in Mainland China report to a female line manager - an improvement from 2016’s result of 32 per cent.

73 per cent of Mainland Chinese respondents perceive that they have equal career opportunities to their colleagues - regardless of age, disability, ethnicity, gender, family commitments, marital status, race, (including colour, national origin), religion or sexuality - higher than their Asian counterparts.

However, just 45 per cent of survey participants in Mainland China trust their leaders to deliver change on D&I while 44 per cent regard their corporate leaders as role models for D&I. These results were both lower than those from other countries/regions included in the survey namely Hong Kong, Malaysia and Singapore however, Japan are behind Mainland China in this regard.

Biases appear to remain as 46% of respondents also believed that they are more likely to be promoted if they have a similar socio-economic background to the organisation’s management.
