Job Description


Job Title: 

Associate Tutor in English for Academic Purposes (EAP)


School/Service: 

Humanities, Language and Global Studies


Grade: G


Responsible to: 

Director of Studies, Language Academy


Job Purpose:

To play a role in the development, design, and delivery of English for Academic Purposes programmes in the School of Humanities, Language and Global Studies.


Main Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Act as a tutor on EAP courses modules under the guidance of a module leader.

2. Contribute to the team¡¯s work in developing EAP courses and relevant teaching materials.

3. Contribute to the development of course documentation such as course information packs.

4. Work with the team to mark student work, monitor student progress and provide feedback.

5. Actively participate as a member of the teaching team.

6. Attend and contribute to relevant meetings.

7. Attend any associated training and development sessions.

8. Carry out any other duties commensurate with the grade.


Working in China


Location:  

  • Beijing, China

  • Wenzhou (Zhejiang), China


Hours: Full Time (1.0 FTE)


Basis: Fixed term contract as per below


Salary:  £33, 397 per annum


Additional Benefits:

  • 270RMB/night accommodation allowance

  • Return transport to Beijing/Wenzhou

  • Visa fee (if required)


Pre-sessional EAP Programme


The Language Academy at UCLan invites applications from qualified and experienced EAP Tutors to work on the following Pre-Sessional EAP programmes in the summer of 2020:


  • 14.5 week Pre-Sessional EAP Programme (27 May - 4 Sept 2020, Beijing)

  • 10.5 week Pre-sessional EAP Programme (24 June - 4 Sept 2020, Beijing and Wenzhou)

  • 6.5 week Pre-sessional EAP Programme (22 July - 4 Sept 2020, Beijing and Wenzhou)


Please state which programme and location you are applying for in your covering letter. You must be available for the whole of that course. The first 3 days of the contract are for staff induction.


The posts are full time and involve a maximum of 21 hours a week contact time, spread over the full week. In addition to teaching and preparing sessions, tutors will carry out marking and assessment, monitor students' progress and provide feedback and pastoral support. Tutors will also be expected to attend online meetings with coordinating staff in the UK.


Requirement


Due to visa restrictions, applicants must be currently in China.


The successful applicant should have a first degree, substantial EAP teaching experience in an academic environment, and hold relevant teaching qualificationsincluding DipTESOL, DELTA or equivalent and Cert TESOL, CELTA or equivalent. Experience of developing teaching and learning resources is also essential.


A flexible, innovative approach to teaching as well as administrative precision and a successful record of working to deadlines are also core requirements for this position.  


Work Experience

  • Experience of EAP teaching in an academic environment. Experience of EAP teaching in UK HE contexts is desirable.

  • Experience of developing teaching and learning resources. Experience of EAP or ELT work outside UK is desirable.


Education/ Qualifications

  • Good honours degree (or equivalent) in a relevant subject. Qualification in teaching in HE is desirable.

  • CertTESOL, CELTA, or equivalentl. MATESOL, MA Applied Linguistics or equivalent is desirable.

  • DipTESOL, DELTA, equivalent qualifications or equivalent experiential learning.


Skills/ Abilities

  • Flexible, innovative approach to teaching.

  • Administrative precision and successful record of working to deadlines.

  • Proven ability to work both on own initiative and as part of team.

  • Ability to use IT and relevant software packages in the support of teaching and learning.

  • Excellent presentation and communication skills.


Other

  • An understanding of and commitment to the University¡¯s values as a framework for decisions, actions and behaviours. Commitment to continued professional development is desirable.

  • Flexibility to meet the demands of a rapidly changing educational environment.
